Hello, my name is Christopher John Osborne and I am the husband of Shiloe Osborne, the creator of Camera Shi Photography (also, love of my life). I would consider myself Scottie Pippen to Shiloe’s Michael Jordan. On a wedding day Shiloe is 100% “the man”, but I am also a Hall of Fame talent that could have potentially made it to the NBA finals a couple of times as the main guy on another team. For proof to my claim, a proposal I second shot at ended up being her second most popular photo on Instagram for awhile (see below). I don’t let her live it down and she constantly tells me I have a big head, but let that be proof that we second shooters have much more to offer than just our good looks!

THE PROS AND CONS OF BEING 2ND SHOOTER

There are definitely pros and cons to being a second shooter. The obvious con is that you are not shooting your own wedding, but that is also the pro. There is no pressure and it is a great environment to practice and see what it takes to photograph a wedding (which is a lot). I think that weddings are enticing to most photographers because you get paid a good chunk of skrilla, but don’t forget, there is a reason you are getting paid that much. I personally did not understand how much work and how exhausting it is to shoot a wedding until my first experience as a second shooter. Not only do you have to have your timeline straight, but you are running around like a crazy person making sure you get all of your shots for 8 plus hours. A very tough job to say the least.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR ALL YOU SECOND SHOOTERS OUT THERE ON THE WEDDING DAY!

  • CLICK AWAY

Take a lot A LOT of photos! The more photos you take, the more practice you’ll get, and the more photos the couple will have at the end of the day. The photographer you are shooting for is obviously looking for quality, but make sure you are getting a bunch of shots for them to choose from. Heck what do you care, you don’t have to edit all of them…

  • BRING PROVISIONS

As someone who constantly gets hangrey, trust me, your going to want to bring some snacks. Water bottles, KIND bars, M&Ms — stock up. A typical wedding day means 8+ hours of shooting non-stop on your feet, and you’ll need a pick me up after hour 4. You can thank me later.

  • WATCH THE MOVIE SHOOTER STARRING MARK WAHLBERG

This has nothing to do with being a second shooter, but I do think the movie will have a positive impact on your life. It is one of my favorites. Mark Wahlberg is tremendous and it is full of action and mystery. It will keep you on the edge of your seat — 9/10. Also, know that I am talking about the movie, not the TV show on Netflix.

  • HAVE A SERVANT HEART

As a second shooter, you are more behind the scenes for the big day. This is a great opportunity to serve and love others well. If you see a need of your photographer, wedding party, or guest, go out of your way to take care of it. This will not only go a long way for the photographer you are working for, but the clients that hired them. After all, being able to serve someone on the happiest day of their life really isn’t a job, but a privilege.

  • BE CONFIDENT

If this is your first wedding and you’re unsure you really know what’s going on, there is the famous quote, “Fake it til you make it.” Obviously know what you are doing to some extent, but really confidence is key. Being confident on the wedding day will result in much better photos than being timid and indecisive. Go for it, you never know how something may turn out!

  • DO THE LITTLE THINGS

There are several things you will do as a second shooter, where you will ask yourself, “Why am I here? I am literally holding a vail in one hand and a plate of food for the bride and groom to eat from in the other. I am a second shooter, and I don’t even have a camera in my hands.” You will be asked to help with, and hopefully be looking for, small tasks all day. All though these tasks are small, they are very much appreciated and needed by the people you are doing them for. Embrace the small tasks!

I would like to say that although I love my wife very much and thoroughly enjoy watching her kill the game in what she is passionate about, let’s not forget that second shooters have the skills to be number two on Instagram for the world to see. I hope that some of my tips help you become a better more confident second shooter, because I believe the best second shooters, always become the best first shooters!
